Sapphire launches GearBox 500 eGPU housing a Radeon RX 6600 XT

A backdoor way to get a Radeon RX 6600 XT?

Getting a Radeon RX 6600 XT isn't easy, but Sapphire decided to install one in their GearBox 500 Thunderbolt 3 Pulse Radeon RX 6600 XT eGFX. This eGPU houses the AMD card launched last August. The case measures 300 × 138 × 204mm, which is a rather compact jig compared to most eGPUs. The other side of the coin is that the internal space for the graphics card is limited: it must not exceed 266 x 125 mm.

To find all the information about the Radeon RX 6600 XT , we invite you to read our test of this reference. Let us simply remember that it is armed with an AMD Navi 23 GPU with 2048 stream processors; 8 GB of 16-bit / s GDDR6 memory with a 128-bit interface, for a memory bandwidth of 256 GB / s. The version installed in the GearBox 500 is therefore the Sapphire Pulse. This has a two-fan cooling system and occupies two slots. Basically, it provides four display outputs (three DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.0) and draws its energy from an 8-pin connector.

Back to our GearBox 500 Thunderbolt 3 Pulse Radeon RX 6600 XT eGFX. As shown, the device connects to a PC through a Thunderbolt 3 port. It is powered by an external 500W power supply and can output up to 60W to the host machine. In addition, it provides the user with a pair of USB 3.0 Type-A ports and a GbE port.

The case is compatible with all Thunderbolt 3/4 compatible systems running Microsoft Windows or MacOS. However, for the latter case, only Intel systems are supported, since with its M1 chips, Apple has abandoned support for third-party GPUs.
